Completion requirements for the CSMS

You must complete the requirements of the Collaborative Specialization in Musculoskeletal Sciences (CSMS), in addition to those requirements for the degree program in your home graduate unit.

  • The Collaborative Specialization Director is responsible for certifying the completion of the Collaborative Specialization requirements.
  • The participating unit is solely responsible for the approval of the student’s home degree requirements.

Upon certification by the Collaborative Specialization Director that all requirements of the Collaborative Specialization have been fulfilled, the designation “Completed [session date] – Collaborative Specialization in Musculoskeletal Science” is shown on your graduate transcript. Your participating unit recommends the granting of the degree.

Master's program requirements

To fulfil the CSMS requirements at Master’s level, you must:

  • satisfy requirements of the participating unit degree program and graduate unit
  • complete the required CSMS Core Course: MSC3001H, Foundations In Musculoskeletal Science
  • attend and participate in 12 seminars of the SRM3335H Seminar Series (Credit/Non Credit)
  • present your research at the CSMS Student Seminars (part of the above Seminar Series)
  • complete a thesis or major project or placement in the area of musculoskeletal sciences under the Supervision of a collaborative specialization core faculty member. If a thesis, this would be your main MSc thesis, not an additional one.

Doctoral program requirements

To fulfil the CSMS requirements at PhD level, you must:

  • satisfy requirements of the participating unit degree program and graduate unit
  • complete the required CSMS Core Course: MSC3001H, Foundations In Musculoskeletal Science
  • attend and participate in 18 seminars of the SRD4445H Doctoral Seminar Series (Credit/Non Credit)
  • present your research at the CSMS Student Seminars (part of the above Seminar Series)
  • complete a thesis or major project or placement  in the area of musculoskeletal sciences under the supervision of a collaborative specialization core faculty member. If a thesis, this would be your main PhD thesis, not an additional one.

Transferring from MSc to PhD level

  • If you have enrolled in the Collaborative Specialization at the master’s level and transfer to the Doctoral level, you will have the course MSC3001H Foundations in Musculoskeletal Science counted toward the completion of the doctoral collaborative specialization requirements.
  • If you transfer from the Master's degree to the Doctoral level in the collaborative specialization, you will be required to attend 18 seminars in total over the course of the Master's and Doctoral collaborative program.
  • If you have completed the collaborative specialization at the Master's level and wish to enroll in the collaborative specialization at the Doctoral level, you will not be required to repeat the core course, Foundations of Musculoskeletal Science, but will be required to attend and participate in 18 seminars of the SRD4445H Doctoral seminar series and complete the Doctoral thesis in the area under the supervision of the graduate faculty member.
