Academic Appointments

You must make academic appointment requests to the Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP). 

The Departmental Appointments Committee (DAC) reviews new appointments to determine eligibility and rank.

If the Chair concurs with the DAC’s recommendation, the appointment dossier is submitted to the Temerty Faculty of Medicine Academic HR Office for final review and approval. 

Academic appointments that are coordinated by the Chair's office include:

  • Part-Time Academic
  • Contractually Limited Term Appointment

Clinical Appointments

Recruitment of Clinical Academic Positions (search and job posting) 

We require Full-Time Clinical appointments to be posted in the University of Toronto's Career Opportunities website. 

  • Use the template (PDF) to draft an advertisement.
  • Advertisements must run for a minimum of 35 working days before making an offer. 
  • A university representative is required for academic faculty search. The university representative is usually the Department Chair or his/her delegate. Please contact the Department Chair when setting up the search committee.  
  • The hospital department must check with their hospital Human Resources with regards to meeting the requirements for the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application, in case a foreign candidate is identified.  The University does not assist with LMIA application for foreign physicians. 
  • Search committees are strongly encouraged to complete the unconscious bias exercises

Full-Time Clinical Academic Appointment

  • Engages in academic work for at least 80% of professional working time. An individual may work part time but devote 80 per cent or more of his/her professional working time to academic work, he/she will be appointed as a full-time equivalent.  
  • Holds an active medical staff or equivalent appointment at an affiliated site 
  • Participates in a Conforming Practice Plan or equivalent 
  • Has an approved academic position description 
  • Successful three-year review leads to “continuing annual appointment” 

Term: initial probationary appointment is for three years

  • CPSO Certificate of Professional Conduct (CPC)  (obtain a copy from hospital Medical Affairs Office or request from CPSO by submitting a form (PDF)). CPC must be current, i.e. issued within the last three years. However, if a physician has a CPC that was used for hospital credentialling, this can be submitted no matter when it was issued.

  • Brief summary of three-year plan for research and/or teaching (word template) 
  • Letter of support from Clinical Chief (indicate estimated hospital start date - academic appointments cannot be backdated) 
  • Two-three internal U of T reference letters. Reference letters must be addressed to the Department Chair, printed in the institution's letterhead and signed.
  • Two-three external to U of T reference letters. Reference letters must be addressed to the Department Chair, printed in the institution's letterhead and signed.

  • Letter of support from Clinical Chief 
  • Four reference letters (addressed to the Department Chair, printed in the institution's letterhead and signed) are required, including for all Professorial ranks:
    • two internal U of T and two external to U of T, or 
    • four internal UofT 

Adjunct Clinical Academic Appointment 

  • Engages in academic work for less than 20% of professional time 
  • Does not hold a medical staff appointment at an affiliated site 
  • Not normally eligible for graduate appointment or to have research grants administered through the University of Toronto 

Term: one-year renewable at the discretion of the Department Chair

Visiting Professor (Clinical) 

  • A physician faculty member from another university or research institute who holds a continuing appointment in his/her home institution. 
  • Expected to contribute to the research and/or teaching activities of LMP and is required to adhere to applicable Departmental, Faculty and University policies during the duration of the visit. 
  • Those participating in clinical care must abide by the hospital or clinical site by-laws and policies and any other hospital directives pertinent to physicians practicing in that institution. 

The Visiting Clinical Professor who intends to participate in clinical care must: 

  • be approved by the Medical Advisory Committee or equivalent of the relevant hospital or clinical site. 
  • obtain from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario a certificate of registration authorizing academic practice by an Academic Visitor. 

Academic appointment and work visa approval can take several months to complete. It is recommended that an application is submitted at least 6 months in advance of planned arrival date. 

Term: no more than one year. Appointments for longer than one year duration require prior approval of the Vice-President and Provost of the University.

Emeritus/ Emerita (Clinical) 

The University has allowed for the honorary title of Emeritus for those who retire from the University at the academic rank of Full or Associate Professor. 

This title may be held by clinical faculty who were either full-time or part-time clinical academic pre-retirement. 

Emeriti do not need to hold a Medical Staff position at a Hospital, but they may do so, with teaching duties as assigned, if the hospital Chief and Department Chair concur.

Application requirements

Qualified retiring faculty should send a letter to the Department Chair requesting Emeritus / Emerita Status and noting retirement date.

Non-clinical Appointments

Status Only Appointments 

  • Normally holds full-time employment arrangement with another institution with a job description that is appropriately academic (components of research and/or teaching) in nature. 

Term: one to three year(s) renewable at the discretion of the Department Chair

  • For faculty with clinical duties, submit an Academic Positon Description signed by candidate and Clinical Chief. 
  • Letter from employing Institute supporting the academic appointment. Letter must state that salary is guaranteed for a minimum of three years 
  • For Research Institute candidates, a letter from VP of Research confirming salary and laboratory space will be guaranteed for a minimum of three years 
  • Search details including: 
    • Copies of advertisement as it appears on the journal including name of journal(s) and date of publication

Adjunct Appointments 

  • Employed elsewhere in a position that is not academic in nature who have special skills or learning of value to LMP and who may provide services for which recognition is desirable. 
  • Do not usually involve full membership in the School of Graduate Studies but may give the opportunity to teach graduate courses or to co-supervise graduate students.

  • Non-clinical Status-Only appointees in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine who hold a primary appointment at one of the fully affiliated University teaching hospitals and have held the rank of Full Professor (Status-Only) for at least 10 years, may be eligible for the title Professor Emeritus/Emerita (Status-Only). 
  • The title Professor Emeritus/Emerita (Status-Only) at the University of Toronto may not be held concurrently with emeritus rank or title from any other institution. 
  • This is an honorary title only and does not confer the rights accorded to other Emeritus/Emerita Professors at the University of Toronto (e.g., as contained in the Policy on Emeritus/Emerita Status or the Statement of Commitment to Retired Faculty and Librarians). 
  • Where appropriate and with the approval of the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, those holding the title of Professor Emeritus/Emerita (Status-Only) may be granted membership in SGS at the rank of SGS membership held at the time of retirement. 
  • Use of the title “Professor Emeritus” must always be followed by the qualifier (Status-Only).

Graduate Appointments 

  • Academic faculty wishing to hold Graduate Appointment must be appointed or cross-appointed to LMP. A separate application to obtain graduate appointment is required.

  • Letter requesting a graduate appointment with LMP, addressed to the Department Chair 
  • current CV including details of: 
    • academic appointment(s) at U of T 
    • publications 
    • grants and/or funding held and applied for, indicating start and end dates 
    • description of lab space; if the lab is not located on the St. George campus, also include a description of 
    • resources/personnel that would contribute to the quality of the students' graduate experience 
    • summary of experience relevant to graduate supervision including classroom teaching, advisory committee membership, and laboratory training of students (graduate, undergraduate, post-docs, residents, etc.) 
  • a letter of support from the candidate’s primary graduate unit chair, if applicable.

DAC does not usually meet during the summer. Contact the LMP HR Office if you have a new appointment request that needs to be approved during the summer. 

Documents must be submitted three weeks prior to the meeting. Incomplete documentation will result in a delay in reviewing your appointment. 

The application review process can take up to eight weeks to be approved.
