Dr Bo-Yee (Bo) Ngan obtained his undergraduate degrees (B.A. from California State University, Fresno CA in 1972 and in 1975 MSc in Microbiology from University of Connecticut.

He graduated from University of Toronto Medical School in 1982 and also obtained a PhD degree in Experimental Pathology, Department of Pathology, U of T in 1981. He completed his FRCP training in Anatomical Pathology at U of T.

In 1986, he received the R.N Starr Medal in Medicine for his autopsy analyses in AIDS patients in Toronto during his residency training.

Between 1975 and 1989 he obtained several scholarships; an MRC fellowship for research studies in molecular biology of lymphomas including hematopathology fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center under Dr R.F. Dorfman (Lymphoma), Dr R.Warnke (immunopathology) and Dr ML Cleary (molecular pathology).

He received the Arthur Purdy Stout Prize in Surgical Pathology in 1989 at the USCAP annual meeting for his research studies in BCL2 in follicular lymphoma.

In 1989 he was appointed Active Staff in the Division of Pathology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center where he was also reference pathologist for lymphoid malignancies for the Sunnybrook Bayview Cancer Center where he set up the first molecular laboratory for the diagnosis and research of Lymphoma.

Between 1997 and 1999 he worked as a Consultant Pathologist at Singapore General Hospital.

In 1999, he joined SickKids Hospital as a staff pathologist. He has been covering surgical pathology (with emphasis on lymphoid malignancies) and autopsy pathology. His other area of interest is immunology of transplantation where he serves as a consultant pathologist for a newly expanding clinical service of organ transplantation (liver, lung heart, and bowel).

In the academic health science center environment, he has published 107 papers on various topics in peer reviewed journals.

His publications in peer review journals focus on:

  • pathology and immunopathology of adult and childhood lymphomas
  • pediatric head and neck malignancies
  • pediatric gastrointestinal diseases
  • pediatric lymphoproliferative disorders
  • post solid organ transplant lymphoproliferative diseases
  • congenital thymic dysplasia
  • secondary lymphomas associated with primary immunodeficiency.

Recent interests include publishing book chapters in pediatric lymphomas (Cambridge University Press) and being one of the editors and chapter authors in a soon to be published Pediatric Head and Neck Textbook: Pathology, Surgery and Imaging (Springer-Verlag Press, 2019).

Research Synopsis

Clinico-pathological studies in characterizing mechanisms of diseases, to improve their diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

Elucidating the pathogenesis and prognostic features of childhood tumours with studies in the patterns of immunological, cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities of benign and malignant childhood malignancies.

Studies in pediatric lymphomas, the distinctive subtypes and other lymphoproliferative diseases such as post-transplant lymphomas, with emphasis on characterizing the immunological and molecular mechanisms.

Studies in pediatric enteropathies, gastro-intestinal disorders and the role of immune mediators in inflammatory bowel disesaes.
