Humans of LMP: Jenni Bozec

Jenni Bozec

Each month we'll speak to a member of the LMP community and find out more about them.

This month it is Jenni Bozec, our new Communications and Outreach Officer.

If you would like to be featured, or know someone who should be, use the nomination form on our Humans of LMP page.

What is your role and what does it involve?

I am the Communications and Outreach Officer in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology. I’m responsible for all the formal communications in the department, from alumni relations to supporting student recruitment and managing the website.

I’ll be providing internal communications support and have just set up LMP’s first social media channel! We’re now on Twitter so please follow us.

How long have you been at LMP and what was your previous role?

I started at LMP at the end of September. I haven’t been around much yet as I’ve been concentrating on getting our new website up and running which has just launched so please check it out!

I’m now turning my attention to communication planning and channels so looking forward to meeting more of my colleagues at LMP, albeit it virtually (which is a really strange way to start a job).

Before joining LMP, I worked at University College London (UCL) in the UK.

There I was head of internal communications for the education strategy. That involved planning and executing communications to the 12,000 staff and 40,000 students around progress with the strategy and managing their Teaching and Learning Portal, a huge resource of case studies, news and toolkits related to teaching practices.

Since moving to Canada, I’ve worked freelance doing things like redesigning the content in parts of the Faculty of Dentistry website.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

I’m a real geek around strategizing and measuring communications and ran a project to look at how we could measure engagement with our website content at UCL.

This involved organising workshops with communications colleagues across the university and working closely with a Google Analytics specialist.

I managed to stop our department spending ages creating and looking at Google Analytics reports that told us nothing, and moved us to a dashboard that measured specific engagement metrics by topics which were aligned to our strategic objectives.

It was really a lot of fun and I learned a huge amount (and saved lots of people’s time!).

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?

Where do I start?! There is a lot to do at LMP and I can’t wait to get going with everything.

My biggest ‘to do’ is to find out what’s going on! So, if you have a story, or published a major paper – please let me know! (lmp.communications@utoronto.ca)

Right now, I’m trying to plan some basic communications to tide us over until our departmental strategic planning process is underway as that will inform our communications strategy.

I’m polishing off the website, getting our newsletter and Twitter going and supporting colleagues with their current communications, like promoting programs.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

I constantly change my mind about these kinds of things so this will probably change next week, but right now its:

Album: America by 30 Seconds to Mars at the moment

Film: I’m forcing my kids to watch all the movies I grew up with at the moment so have just been reminded of how much I love Ferris Buellers Day Off!

Novel: Brave new world

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

Well, I have two kids so our jokes are pretty juvenile.

Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Because 7, 8, 9

Who would be your dream dinner guests?

  • Barack Obama
  • Jesus
  • Sean Connery

It would be the strangest dinner…..

What advice would you give your younger self?

Be confident in your abilities and stop doubting yourself!

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I’m married to a biophysicist who specialises in the structure and aging of collagen – my husband is actually cross-appointed at LMP.

What is your favourite place?

Plockton area in the West Coast of Scotland. It would be the most beautiful place in the world if it wasn’t for all the rain and insects.
