Speaker: Dr. Aly Karsan

Aly KarsanDr. Karsan is a clinician-scientist in the Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer.

His research is focused on the molecular basis of myeloid cancers with a focus on post-transcriptional mechanisms of resistance and relapse.

He has a major focus on understanding the relationship of noncoding RNAs and the regulation of the epigenome.

His lab has also identified specific defects in the ubiquitin pathway in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that are potentially tied to regulation of the epigenome, and is using proteomic, genomic and in vivo methods to define the role of this pathway in leukemogenesis and hematopoietic stem cell function.

His clinical interest centres on developing genomic methodologies, and improving automation and quality assurance in clinical genomics.

He established the Centre for Clinical Genomics, which was the first accredited lab in Canada to use next-generation sequencing techniques to deliver clinical testing.
