With over 150 graduate faculty, LMP is involved in a broad spectrum of biomedical research at the basic, translational and clinical level:

Basic Research: Interested in deciphering the inner workings of the cell? Curious how these basic processes operate in health and disease? Basic science provides the essential foundation to reveal the causes and mechanisms of disease. To treat the major diseases of today such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s and AIDS, we need a broad base of knowledge. By understanding the specific cellular and molecular changes involved in the development of disease, researchers are then able to translate their findings into translational and clinical research and ultimately improved patient care.

Translational Research: Looking to move basic science discoveries into the clinic? Are you interested in the challenge of advancing knowledge from the bench to the bedside? Do you want to relate the mechanisms of disease to successful treatment? Pre-clinical research is the next step in understanding if a therapy will be successful for patients. Before a treatment is approved, it must go through extensive pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo studies, which will determine whether the drug is safe and effective.

Clinical Research: How do clinical scientists influence novel therapeutics? Do you want to learn how to measure the efficacy and outcomes of treatments? How did one LMP researcher discover a malfunctioning heart valve? Or how is another researcher investigating a novel therapy for children with severe malaria in Jinja, Uganda? Once a medication, treatment or device is approved in pre-clinical trials, clinical trials determine the safety and effectiveness in humans.
