Master of Science (MSc)

Candidates for this degree must have completed, or be about to complete one of the following:

  • An appropriate bachelor's degree in the Life Sciences from a recognized university.
  • An MD, DDS, DVM (or equivalent) professional degree.

A minimum A- average over the final two years of undergraduate study is needed. 
Strong performance is also important in second year Life Science-based courses including molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and physiology. It is expected in years three and four that coursework in Life Science subjects is at an advanced level (i.e. appropriate number of 300- & 400-series courses or equivalent). Research experience is an asset.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

There are three routes of entry available:

Track A: Highly qualified BSc graduates meeting the following requirements may be eligible to apply directly to the PhD Program:

  • An appropriate bachelor's degree in the Life Sciences from a recognized university
  • A minimum A average in the third and fourth years
  • Evidence of strong research experience

Track B:   Excellent students in LMP MSc program may be recommended for transfer to the PhD program by their graduate advisory committee.  Transfer exams are held within 18 months after the start of the MSc program.  

Track C:  Applicants with MSc, MD, DDS, DVM (or equivalent) degree.  A minimum A- average is required in graduate courses, or in senior-level BSc coursework if MSc course requirements were minimal or absent.  There should also be evidence of competence in research based on scientific publications, abstracts, or conference presentations.  

ADDITIONAL Requirements for Applicants Who Have Been Educated Outside Canada

English Proficiency

All incoming graduate students must have a good command of English. Applicants educated outside of Canada, or whose native language is not English, are required to provide evidence of competence in the English language by completing one of the tests listed below. Minimum score requirements must be met before students are considered for the graduate program.

Graduate Record Examination  (GRE)

Applicants educated outside Canada also need to take the general GRE and GRE Subject Test (Biology) and scores must be submitted as part of the application (late scores are not accepted). The score requirement is normally at or above the 80th percentile, as indicated in the following chart:

Note for International (VISA) students: You are encouraged to contact faculty members during the application phase in order to have the support of a potential supervisor prior to the application deadline.  A student may be recommended for admission but will not gain admission without securing a supervisor.
