Academic appointment requests must be made to the Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP.)

The Departmental Appointments Committee (DAC) reviews new appointments to determine eligibility and rank. If the Chair concurs with the DAC’s recommendation, the appointment package is submitted to the Faculty of Medicine Academic HR Office for final review and approval.

Recruitment of Clinical Academic Positions (Search & Job Posting)

  • LMP requires Full-Time Clinical appointments to be posted in the University of Toronto's Career Opportunities website.
  • Ads must run for a minimum of 4 weeks before making an offer (click here for ad template).
  • A university representative is required for academic faculty search. The university representative is usually the Department Chair or his/her delegate.  Please contact the Department Chair when setting up the search committee. 
  • The hospital department must check with their hospital Human Resources with regards to meeting the requirements for the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application, in case a foreign candidate is identified.  The University does not assists with LMIA application for foreign physicians.

Full-Time Clinical Academic Appointment

  • Engage in academic work for at least 80% of professional working time 1
  • Holds an active medical staff or equivalent appointment at an affiliated site
  • Participate in a Conforming Practice Plan or equivalent
  • Have an approved academic position description
  • Successful three-year review leads to “continuing annual appointment”

Term: initial probationary appointment is for three years

Annual Academic Review: required to participate in annual review process

  • Have an approved academic position description

Term: one-year renewable at the discretion of the Department Chair

  • Brief summary of 3-year plan for research and/or teaching
  • CPSO Certificate of Professional Conduct (obtain a copy from hospital Medical Affairs Office or CPSO)2

  • for professorial rank (Assistant, Associate or full Professor), four reference letters are required

Adjunct Clinical Academic Appointment

  • Does not hold a medical staff appointment at an affiliated site
  • Not normally eligible for graduate appointment or to have research grants administered through the University of Toronto

Visiting Professor (Clinical)

  • A physician faculty member from another university or research institute who holds a continuing appointment in his/her home institution.
  • Expected to contribute to the research and/or teaching activities of LMP and is required to adhere to applicable Departmental, Faculty and University policies during the duration of the visit.
  • Those participating in clinical care must abide by the hospital or clinical site by-laws and policies and any other hospital directives pertinent to physicians practicing in that institution.
  • The Visiting Clinical Professor who intends to participate in clinical care must:
    • Be approved by the Medical Advisory Committee or equivalent of the relevant hospital or clinical site.
    • Obtain from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario a certificate of registration authorizing academic practice by an Academic Visitor.

Term: no more than one year. Appointments for longer than one year duration require prior approval of the Vice-President and Provost of the University.

Status Only Appointments

  • Normally holds full-time employment arrangement with another institution with a job description that is appropriately academic (components of research and/or teaching) in nature.

Annual Academic Review: required to participate in annual review process

Application Requirements:

  • Curriculum Vitae (strongly encouraged to follow Faculty of Medicine CV guidelines)
  • Summary of 3-year plan for research and/ or teaching
  • Letter from employing Institute supporting the academic appointment.  Letter must state that salary is guaranteed for a minimum of 3 years
  • For Research Institute candidates, a letter from VP of Research confirming salary and laboratory space will be guaranteed for a minimum of 3 years
  • Search Details including:

Adjunct Appointments

  • Employed elsewhere in a position that is not academic in nature who have special skills or learning of value to LMP and who may provide services for which recognition is desirable.
  • Do NOT usually involve full membership in the School of Graduate Studies but may give the opportunity to teach graduate courses or to co-supervise graduate students.

  • Faculty from other universities and/or research institutes who hold continuing appointments in their home institutions.

Graduate Appointments

  • Academic faculty wishing to hold Graduate appointment must be appointed or cross-appointed to LMP. A separate application to obtain graduate appointment is required.
    • letter requesting a graduate appointment with LMP, addressed to the Department Chair
    • current CV including details of:
      • academic appointment(s) at U of T
      • publications
      • grants and/or funding held and applied for, indicating start and end dates
      • description of lab space; if the lab is not located on the St. George campus, also include a description of
      • resources/personnel that would contribute to the quality of the students' graduate experience
      • summary of experience relevant to graduate supervision including classroom teaching, advisory committee membership, and laboratory training of students (graduate, undergraduate, post-docs, residents, etc.)
    • a letter of support from the candidate’s primary graduate unit chair, if applicable

DAC does not meet during the summer.   Contact the LMP HR Coordinator if you have a new appointment request that needs to be approved during the summer.

Documents must be submitted 3 weeks prior to the meeting.  Incomplete documentation will result in a delay in reviewing your appointment.

Please note the application review process can take up to 8 weeks to be approved.

 

1 An individual may work part time but devote 80 per cent or more of his/her professional working time to academic work, he/she will be appointed as a full-time equivalent.

2 CPC must be current, i.e. issued within the the last 3 years.  However, if a physician has a CPC that was used for hospital credentialling, this can be submitted no matter when it was issued.

3 Refererence letters must be addressed to the Department Chair, printed in the institution's letterhead and signed.
